Independent Baptists are failing to carry out the Great Commission, and the major reason for this failure is that they are disobeying the first commandment.
Admitting Our Failure
If we are to ultimately succeed in the mission Christ has entrusted into our hands, we must first admit our present failure. and determine its cause. Our present failure is obvious: as a whole, our churches are shrinking in size; few new churches are being started; we seem powerless to win people to Christ; fewer and fewer men are surrendering to the ministry; many missionaries are coming home from their respective fields due to inadequate support, and are not being replaced; mission funds are increasingly in short supply for the missionaries still serving; the world's humanistic culture is influencing our churches more then our Christian culture is influencing the world; and our churches are graying-many of our churches have almost no children, and their vitality is slowly being snapped by the aging and death of adult members. Our shrinking numbers are resulting in shrinking financial resources. And as our numerical and financial resources dwindle our influence upon the world dwindles also and we become increasingly weaker. And as we grow increasingly weaker, the pagans tighten up the screws of affliction and oppression.
If we are to receive any rewards at the Judgment Seat of Christ, we must turn this situation around. Five billion souls are dependent upon us to tell them the Gospel story. We have most likely presented the Gospel to less than one percent of these people. This is sin, sin, sin!
The Reason For Our failure
Considering our small numbers and our dwindling financial resources it should be obvious to all that we are not going to be able to succeed at our mission except God be with us. And if we want God to be with us we are going to have to do things God's way. But what are we doing wrong? We send our missionaries out Scripturally-directly through the church. We use the KJV Bible, so we definitely have the sword of the Spirit. We stand against the sins of abortion, homosexuality, fornication, adultery, worldly music, etc. We are local, visible church men. We believe in the six-day, literal creation, in the Trinity, in the virgin birth of Christ, in the substitutionary atonement, in the pre-millennium return of Christ, and in all the other fundamentals of the faith. We work hard at evangelism and support missions. So why are we failing. Because we are breaking the first commandment.
Baptists Have Been Deceived
Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) was a socialist and a neo-Malthusian. So dedicated was she to humanist principles, that in 1957 she was declared Humanist of the Year by the American Humanist Association. She was habitually unfaithful to her two husbands as a matter of principle (she did not believe in marriage), and repeatedly participated in group sex orgies and other vile sexual perversions. She used drugs and participated in the occult. We know these things from the journals and letters she left behind when she died. But while she was alive she carefully hid her private life from the public. She dressed very conservatively on purpose to conceal the radicalness of her goals and methods. She was an excellent public speaker, and most Baptist women and pastors swallowed her message hook, line and sinker. She has persuaded almost all Baptist couples to break the first commandment.
As a humanist/atheist Margaret Sanger hated Christianity with a passion. And she intended to do everything in her power to destroy Christianity. More then any other person in history, she has succeeded in her mission. As a neo-Malthusian she realized that all it takes to completely eliminate a group of people is to somehow keep them from having babies for just one generation. Even if there be multiplied millions of them to start with, their numbers will be reduced to zero if they are simply kept from reproducing for one single generation. That is stark naked reality. George Grant quotes Margaret Sanger as saying: "Birth control appeals to the advanced radical because it is calculated to undermine that authority of the Christian Churches. I look forward to seeing humanity free someday of the tyranny of Christianity no less than Capitalism."1
As mother of the birth control movement in America, and as founder of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (the group called into our public schools to teach sex-education to our children), Margaret Sanger has done more to undermine Christianity than any other person in the history of the world. The main reason we independent Baptist are failing in our mission is because in the privacy of our bedrooms we are practicing the teachings of humanist Margaret Sanger instead of the teachings of the Word of God. What we do in our bedrooms are very private acts, but those acts have very public and far reaching consequences. Those acts are not just our own personal business, but they are God's business. By practicing the humanist doctrine of birth control we Baptists are eliminating our own selves. What Pharaoh could not accomplish by coercion Margaret Sanger accomplished by persuasion. We are despising and rejecting the heritage and reward of the Lord.
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. Psalm 127.3-5)For this rejection of God's heritage we are paying a bitter price. Multiplied thousands of Baptist children that should have been born have not been born, and are not attending our churches. They are not supporting our churches with their tithes. They are not surrendering to the ministry. They are not showing up for visitation to evangelize our communities. They cannot because they are not. Thus, we have sabotaged our own mission. For this we will surely give account before God.
The First Commandment
The very first commandment given to human beings is found in the very first chapter of the Word of God:
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. (Gen 1.27-28)This is the first commandment given in the Bible because it is of extreme importance. Without obedience to this command, God's plan for humans would not be accomplished, for there would be no humans.
The First Commandment Is Our Hope For Success
Just as disobedience to this commandment has greatly reduced our numbers, so obeying it could rapidly make us the dominate influence on earth. Consider for example the following synopsis. Let us assume that there are only 1,000 sound, independent Baptist churches in the USA. Surely this is a very conservative figure. Let us further assume that these 1,000 churches have an average active membership of only 50 people. And let us say that each family averaged 5 individuals. Fifty divided by 5 equals 10 families per church. Ten families per church times 1,000 churches equals 10,000 married couples. What will happen if these 10,000 married couples throw out all their contraceptives, and being obeying God in their bedrooms? Provided God should see fit to bless each married couple with a total of 12 children, and provided each of the children produced would also get saved and obey Christ this is what would happen in just 7 generations:
Generation Number of Baptists
Baptist would multiply in numbers to over five times the present population of the earth! Baptist would dominate the earth. Baptist would dominate every election. Baptist would truly "have dominion" in all areas of life-in dress, in culture, in music, in politics, in business, in entertainment, in everything Baptist would be in control. Baptist would be so plentiful that even if each of them tried to win only one person to Christ in his lifetime, they would have trouble finding enough lost people around to do so.
The present True Fertility Rate in the United States is only 1.8. Below is what the future will look like for independent Baptist should they also produce only 1.8 children per married couple.
Generation Number of Baptists
If we continue to practice humanist birth control in pace with the average Americans, we will have reduced our numbers to less than one half in just seven generations! Our influence will be nil. We will be the tail wagged by the pagan dog. All aspects of life will be dominated by the forces of evil. Our weakness will invite unnecessary persecution and affection. At this point we would be so reduced in number that we could not even properly evangelize a state, much less the world.
This is no laughing matter, and should wake up at least a few pastors as to why their churches are shriveling up. I was in one church which had hanging on a wall a picture of that church some 40 or 50 years ago. There were approximately 500 people in that picture, but that church has only approximately 100 members today. But ponder this long and well: they have the same number of families today that they had then!
The First Commandment Is Still In Effect
Consider that the first commandment was before the law and even before the fall of man into sin. But raising large families is even more important now since the fall of man than it was before. Why? Because now death is constantly reducing our numbers, while before the fall there was no death. God's post-fall plan is to greatly multiply woman's conception so as to be able to accomplish His will with the human race:
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee. (Gen 3:16)To emphasize that the first commandment is still in effect, it is repeated many times throughout the Bible. For example:
And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth...And you, be ye fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. (Gen 9.1-7)Notice that the last reference above in a New Testament reference. Never is there even a hint in the Bible that the first commandment is repealed.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel. And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins; And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land. (Gen 35.10-12)
I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. (1 Tim 5:14)
The First Commandment is a Blessing not a Curse
Having a large family is not a curse as Margaret Sanger has led so many people to believe. Believe God not Margaret Sanger. Margaret Sanger was a notorious liar, but God cannot lie. God says that to have many children is to be mightily blessed. We have already read this in Gen 3.16 and 9.1-7. But there are many other references:
A Song of degrees. Blessed is every one that feareth the LORD; that walketh in his ways. For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee. Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table. Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the LORD. (Ps 128.1-4)Barrenness on the other hand is a curse, not a blessing. To be sterile is an evil, not a good. To be infertile is a misfortune, not a fortune.
And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; (Gen 28.1-3; see also Gen 17.1-6; 48.3-4; Deut 8.1; and Lev 26.3-13 and there are many other similar verses.)
If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance. Moreover he will bring upon thee all the diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they shall cleave unto thee. Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, them will the LORD bring upon thee, until thou be destroyed. And ye shall be left few in number, whereas ye were as the stars of heaven for multitude; because thou wouldest not obey the voice of the LORD thy God. And it shall come to pass, that as the LORD rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you; so the LORD will rejoice over you to destroy you, and to bring you to nought; and ye shall be plucked from off the land whither thou goest to possess it.(Deut 28.58-63; see also Prov 30.15-16)
Birth Control Is Sin
Every form of birth control mentioned in the Bible is forbidden, without exception.
Abstinence Is Forbidden
While abstinence is commanded outside of marriage (Heb 13.1), it is forbidden within marriage except for during short periods of prayer and fasting-and even then only with permission from one's mate. In fact to deny sexual privileges to one's lawfully wedded mate is declared to be fraud.
The wife hath not power of her own body, but the husband: and likewise also the husband hath not power of his own body, but the wife. Defraud ye not one the other, except it be with consent for a time, that ye may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, that Satan tempt you not for your incontinency. (1 Cor 7.4-5)
Coitus Interruptus Is Forbidden
God hates the coitus interruptus method of birth control so much that he killed one man that practiced it.
And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. (Gen 38.7-10)
The Rhythm Method Is Forbidden
The rhythm method of birth control requires the intimate relationship to take place during the time Lev 15.9-33 declares a women to be unclean. This passage is too lengthy to quote here, but is well worth looking up. Intercourse during this time of uncleanness is forbidden.
And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people. (Lev 20.18)While space forbids expounding on it in this tract, it is worth noting that scientific research shows that babies conceived outside of the time allowed in Lev 19.9-33 are predominately weak, sickly females---instead of strong and healthy males and females.
Abortion Is Forbidden
In the Old Testament, violence which resulted in a woman giving premature birth was even if it did not result in harm to the baby. If the baby was harmed the punishment could be as severe as capital punishment. Abortion is murder-a capital offense.
If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. (Ex 21.22-25)
Infanticide Is Forbidden
Infanticide is the murder of a child while it is still an infant. This has been and still is a common method of birth control (if it can be so termed) among heathen cultures. In ancient times many pagans would burn their infants alive as sacrifices to the idol Molech. The Bible strongly condemns such wickedness. "And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech" (Lev 18.21)
Homosexuality Is Forbidden
The method of birth control advocated most aggressively by humanists at present is sodomy. God says:
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion. Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. (Lev 18.22-25; see also Lev 20.13)Seeing that every form of birth control known to man in the days in which in which the Bible was written was forbidden, It stands to reason that all modern methods of birth control (pills, condoms, diaphragms, foam, etc.) are also wrong and should not be used by Christians.
Why have we committed this great sin in disobeying the first commandment? Because (1) we don't love God enough to see His image reproduced; (2) we don't value our doctrines enough to see them preserved; (3) we don't love our mates enough to see them reproduced; (4) We have been too selfish to share our resources with children; (5) we are materialistic; (6) we are rebellious and disobedient; (7) we haven't thought ahead; (8) we haven't had enough faith in God to believe that He can and will provide finances to enable us to raise a large family. We all knew about the first commandment, but we ignored it.
Now There Is Tremendous Opportunity
Humanists and other pagans in the USA are practicing birth control to the point that their True Fertility Rate is below the replacement level. This presents a tremendous opportunity for us to very quickly become more and mightier then they. The children of Israel only numbered 70 souls when they went to Egypt (Ex 1:5), but those 70 souls obeyed the first commandment.
And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them. Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph. And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. We already know that rest of the story. The Hebrews midwives refused to practice infanticide. "Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty." (Ex 1.20) And thank God, Moses's mother did not believe in birth control. The obedience of the children of Israel to the first commandment was the number one factor in their deliverance from the bondage of Egypt.
What Will Happen If We Repent
Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant and the mercy which he swear unto thy fathers: And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee. Thou shalt be blessed above all people: there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle. And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate thee. (Deut. 7:12-15)God will financially enable us to raise large families once we repent and obey the first commandment. Also, our churches will grow in size, in number, and in influence. And our wives will be healthier off the pill. Only God---not birth control---can save us from our problem. Have faith in God not in humanism!
