What Is the True Meaning of the Lord's Supper?

Pastor Harold P. Chiolero

Breaking of Bread (Acts 2:42)

Lord's Table (1 Cor. 10:21)

Communion (1 Cor. 10:16)

Mat. 26:26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

 27 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;
28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
29 But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.

Is It Open, Close or Closed?

The Lord's Supper

Is one of two ordinances

1. Baptism---the entrance to the church. 2. Lord's Supper---the sustainer of church purity. Acts 2:41, 42; 1 Cor. 11:27, 30.

Is a Supper not a breakfast. The Lord's Supper was instituted in the evening and observed in the evening. Mark 14:17, Mat. 26:20.

The Lord's Supper

Is restricted to a place: the local Baptist church, when it assembles. 1 Cor. 11:18.

The Lord's Supper

Is restricted to a time: chosen by the church "As oft as ye do it" (1 Cor. 11:25). Once a year, once a quarter, once a month...

The Lord's Supper

Is restricted to the saved, baptized members of the church administering the supper. A closed table to all others. 1 Cor. 11:18-20; Mat. 26:17-18.

The Lord's Supper

Is restricted to its purpose; a memorial of Christ's death until He returns, to maintain purity within the church through examination, confession and forsaking, 1 Cor. 11:28-30.

The Lord's Supper

Is restricted to two elements:

1. Unleavened bread---the only kind at the Passover, the only kind acceptable with God. Man has no authority to alter it. Mark 14:12, Mat. 26:17.

2. Fruit of the vine---grape juice (the cup). Nothing but the pure blood of the grape will do. Man has no authority to alter it. Mat. 26:29; Mark 14:23-25; Deut. 32:14.

Lev. 10:9-10 Express command not to drink wine nor stong drink.

Prov. 20:1 No wise man will drink wine or liquor.

Habakkuk 2:15 It's wrong to give your neighbor strong drink.

Romans 14:21 Drinking will cause one's brother to stumble.

Luke 1:15 The first Baptist didn't drink wine or strong drink. He was great in the sight of the Lord. He is our example to follow.
