During Operation Desert storm, Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu was interviewed by one of the major US tv news anchors. Quite unexpectedly he was asked, "Why do people hate the Jews?" For a few moments, he was taken back. Finally he answered, "I don't know." Since that time, I have come to realize that almost no one knows the root cause of anti-Semitism. Yet it is revealed in the Bible for all to know. I have read many articles detailing case after case of anti-Semitism. But the few articles that tried to explain "why" people hate the Jews, have failed to give the main reason. Why, in fact, do people hate the Jews? Since I am writing this article for a Jewish audience, let me rephrase the question to be more personal. Why, my dear Jewish friend, do so many people hate you so? What is the main cause of their hate. Knowing the answer may help you better deal with the problem.
The history of anti-Semitism
A complete history of anti-Semitism would no doubt take many thousands of pages. The following is only a bare sampling of major events.
The European countries are presently experiencing skyrocketing anti-Semitism. This is in the news almost every day, so I'll not detail it in this article.
Muslims world-wide hate the Jews because they are taught to do so by the Quran. Islam has a long history of hating and slaughtering Jews. There is really nothing Jews can do to stop this hatred as long as there are people that believe in Allah, and therefore obey the plain commands given in the Quran. But to discover the main (root) cause of anti-Semitism, we must ask why Muhammed was motivated to record such racist commands in the Quran in the first place.
Hitler and the Nazis hated the Jews, and formed a plan to execute every single Jew on earth. We all know about the Holocaust. Hitler was acting on his belief in Darwin's theories of macro-evolution and survival of the fittest. He believed he was purifying the human race. But what motivated him to pick the Jews out as lowering the human race? Why didn't he pick on Blacks or Chinese or Italians? Why the Jews?
Haman, the highest official under king Ahasuerus, who reigned from India even unto Ethiopia over 127 provinces, issued an order to execute all the Jews in the kingdom. Only God's intervention prevented this from happening. Read this amazing story in the Bible book of Esther in the Bible.
After Joseph was used of God to save the ancient Egyptians from starvation, one would think that all Egyptians to this very day would be thankful, and therefore careful to treat the Jews with kindness. But the fact is that after Joseph died, a new king rose up that knew not Joseph. This king, called Pharoh, decided that the Jews might try to leave their servant position in Egypt unless he put them into slavery and prevented them from reproducing. Therefore he issued an order to kill all the male babies born to Jewish mothers. This is recorded in Exodus chapter one. This man was totally unreasonable in his hatred of the Jews. Why?
As can be seen from this short history, anti-Semitism dates back thousands of years. It is not a new problem, and so the cause must not be new.
Even Jews Hate the Jews!
Amazingly, the Jewish left-wing in Israel today hates being Jewish and hates Israel in general and hates the Jewish right wing in particular. In fact, it is astounding that they are not tried for treason and executed. They take the side of Israel's enemies on almost every issue. These Jews hate being hated, and seem to think that if they side with their enemies against Israel, then their enemies will stop hating them. How sadly mistaken they are! Why do even Jews hate Jews!
Reasons the Jews are hated (but not the main reason).
The most common reasons commentators give are:
The Jews are rich.
This might be part of the reason. In some parts of Southeast Asia a very diligent Chinese minority controls the economy, and they are hated by the less diligent majority out of jealousy. Yet in these same countries there are virtually no Jews. Ninety-nine percent of the population have never once met a Jew. Nevertheless, most of the people in these countries vehemenently hate the Jews---far greater than they hate the Chinese. Besides this, there are many poor Jews in this world, yet they are hated just as much as the rich Jews. So being rich must not be the main reason Jews are hated.
Jews think they are better than everyone else.
That certainly may be true of some Jews, but it is also true of just about every person on earth! For instance, the Muslims think they are better than Jews. In their writings Muslims say that Jews are pigs and apes, and therefore imply that Muslims are better than Jews. On top of that, most terrorists in this world are Muslim---yet in almost every case the world sides with Muslims against the peace loving Jews! So, this cannot possibly be the main reason Jews are hated more than any other people on earth.
Jews are different.
The Jews eat different foods than other people, and they wear different clothes than other people. Some commentators speculate that this frightens people and makes them feel insecure, thus creating hatred in their hearts. Sure. I agree. But Muslims also eat and dress differently than other people. So do Hindus. Yet the hatred this generates against Muslims and Hindus is minor compared to the hatred directed against the Jews. This cannot be the main reason Jews are hated.
The Jews are lied about.
Jewish author, Gil Mann writes,
Horrible lies about Jews have been spread by anti-Semites to ferment hatred. Also, these lies about Jews have been used for political purposes. Over centuries, in part to stay in power, the Church, monarchs, Nazis, Communists, Arab dictators and others have blamed and focused the misery of their masses on the Jews.It is true that many lies have been told about the Jews. It is also true that these lies fuel anti-Semitism. But that does not explain why these lies originated in the first place.
These lies include that Jews: killed Jesus; caused the Plague; spread AIDS to non-Jewish children; want to control the world; already control banks, government and media; drink the blood of non-Jews for Jewish holiday celebrations (this last lie--amongst others--is currently widely circulated in the Arab world). In the course of history, these lies have so regularly been diseminated, that they have a life of their own. Anti-Semites quote ancient anti-Semites and footnote earlier anti-Semitic writings to prove the authenticity of the lies. (source...)
That the Jews killed Jesus is not a lie, however. They did kill Jesus. But so did the Romans. So did you, dear reader, whoever you be. All men are guilty of murdering Jesus (See Who Killed Jesus Christ?). Why are the Jews then more hated for this then any other group of people?
It is true that God has partly withdrawn His protection from Israel because of their rejecting their Messiah, but the Jews were hated a long time before Jesus was crucified. That is not the main reason people hate the Jews.
The Jews Are Stateless
Since the Jews now have a state, this opinion is completely discredited. An editoral in the Jerusalem Post explained it like this:
Why were the Jews hated? Because, Herzl said, they were a stateless nation in a world of nation-states. Statehood for Jews, he reckoned, would put paid to the accusation that Jews were "rootless cosmopolitans"; indeed, it would rip out the roots of anti-Semitism itself. This editoral is 100% correct in stating that "Jews are hated for who they are." But why? This man obviously does not know.
Zionism has done no such thing. The State of Israel has given Jews political self-determination, great cultural freedom and a margin of physical safety. But anti-Semitism is a beast of many faces. If Jews are not parasitic capitalists they are revolutionary socialists. If they are not rootless cosmopolitans they are ethnic chauvinists. If they are not suspect liberals they are suspect neoconservatives. And so on.
Jew-hatred, then, has no end of justifications. It is an irrational phenomenon, yet unlike other irrational phenomena it defies rational explanation. And this has political ramifications. It tells us that Jew-haters will not be mollified by the creation of a Jewish state, as Herzl supposed, or by its destruction, as modern-day binational state advocates such as Tony Judt suppose.
It means that no amount of Jewish charity will erase the charge of Jewish greed. It means that no amount of Israeli political moderation will persuade Israel's critics that it is, in fact, acting moderately. It means that every Israeli strategic concession will be viewed as an act of weakness, not magnanimity or even choice.
It means that Jews are hated for who they are. What they do, whether for good or ill, is quite beside the point as far as Jew-haters are concerned. (source...)
Some much closer reasons (but still not the main reason).
The Jews are preceived to take a higher moral stand.
Chuck Morse explains this view:
So why then do they hate the Jews? Perhaps the answer to this question is more spiritual than temporal. When one takes a moral stand, or is perceived to be taking a moral stand, one risks bringing calumny upon their heads by those who don't want to be reminded of moral responsibility. If you don't believe me, try expressing a strong moral conviction next time you attend a public or family gathering and see what the reaction is. Jews are perceived as having a moral mission because of the Torah which clearly articulates moral maxims and which is the cornerstone of the Jewish faith. Jews are not necessarily more moral than anyone else but this is irrelevant. The issue is that Jews believe, or are assumed to believe, that they were chosen by God to receive the Torah at Sinai, and because much of the rest of the world either believes this as well or resents the fact that Jews believe it, Jews are held to a higher moral standard than other nations. Believing, or being perceived to believe in a divine moral code, is both a blessing and a burden. (source...)While there may be some truth in Morse's comments, this cannot possibly be the main reason because when Pharoh ordered all the male Israelite babies to be killed the law had not yet been given. And, quite frankly, the Jews in general do not keep the law any better than the average Gentile. Many Hollywood movie producers are Jews, and they rank among the world's foremost corrupter of morals; they have not taken a moral stand, but rather an immoral stand. Nevertheless, they are still hated just because they are Jews. Their moral stand, or lack of a stand, is not the cause of that hatred.
The Jews are God's chosen people to receive the Torah at Sinai.
Morse stated this in the above quote. This is getting much closer to the main reason! The main reason IS because the Jews are God's chosen people, but it is not because they were chosen to receive the Torah. As I just pointed out above, the Jews were hated before the Torah was given. What then were they chosen to do which causes them to be so hated?
The Real Root of Anti-Semitism
The main reason people hate the Jews---and the root of all anti-Semitism---is because Satan does not want his head to be bruised! Yes, you read correctly: the reason Jews are hated everywhere in the world (even in Israel by other Jews) is because Satan doesn't want his head to be bruised! In other words, the hatred of the Jews is inspired of Satan because he doesn't want his head to be bruised. Specifically, anti-Semitism is Satan's response to God's curse put upon him in Genesis 3:14-15.
As a result of Satan deception of Eve in the Garden of Eden, "the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: and I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel."
The seed of the woman mentioned in this verse is none other than the Messiah. God prophesied that Satan would bruise the Messiah's heal, but that in the end the Messiah would bruise Satan's head. Satan immediately began to try to prevent God's prophesy from being fulfilled, and his efforts will continue until he is cast into the Lake of Fire. Anti-semitism is the result of Satan's efforts to kill the Messiah before the Messiah can bruise Satan's head.
Cain hated Abel
Satan's first target was Abel. Cain loved Satan, and was therefore no problem. But Satan was concerned that Abel might be the Messiah or the one through whom the Messiah would come. So Satan motivated Cain to kill him. Here is what happened:
Genesis 4:1 And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5 But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.Satan, in his insanity, no doubt thought that he had thus defeated God. But God, of course, cannot be defeated, and gave Eve another son through who the Messiah would someday be born.
Gen. 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew. 26 And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD.
Ishmel hated Isaac
The next mention of the Messiah is when God blessed Abram.
Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: 3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. When God said, "...in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed," God was referring to Abram's future decendent who would become the Messiah---the Savior of the world. Satan again tried to prevent the birth of this promised Messiah by tempting Abram's wife, Sarah, to have Abram sleep with Hagar, her Egyptian servant. From this unholy union was conceived Ishmael.
Gen.16:11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her [Hagar], Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. 12 And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. This wild man is the father of the Arab nations, and through his decendents Ismael's hand is against every man, for the major share of terrorism to this day is committed by Arabs and those they influence. Satan, no doubt, in his insanity thought again that he had defeated God's plan. But, of course, God cannot be defeated, and in due time God let Abram (now renamed Abraham) know that Ishmael was not the promised seed.
Gen. 16:15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her. 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear? 18 And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee! 19 And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. 20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. 21 But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.God always keeps His promises, and in due time the promised child through whom the Messiah would come was born.
Genesis 21:1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. 2 For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bare to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac being eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was an hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. 6 And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. 7 And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age. 8 And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. 9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. 10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. 11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.Abraham's firstborn son is thus cast out in shame, and received no inheritance. And in Gen. 22:2, God refers to Isaac as Abraham "only son," thus placing Ismael in the category of a bastard. To this day, the decendents of Ismael refuse to accept this, and passionately hate the decendents of Isaac because of it.
Esau hated Jacob
Pharoh hated Jewish boys.
Herod hated Jewish boys.
Jewish unbelievers tried to push the Messiah off a cliff.
The whole world rejected the Messiah and nailed Him to a cross.
Satan still hopes to prevent the Messiah from saving His people.
Revelation 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. 5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. 6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. 11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. 12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time. 13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child. 14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. 15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. 16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Dear Jewish friends, you don't like being rejected and hated without cause, yet you do the same to your Messiah. "Why, what evil hath He done?" You choose leaders to save you, but they always let you down. You turn to anyone except to the only one that has the power to save you. To your Messiah you say, "We will not have this man to rule over us. We will accept anyone but Jesus." His moral stand is too high for your liking. Still, He loves you, and waits patiently to save you when you so will him to do it.
